Shostakovich's music has a "learning curve"...... Not quite to the level of Bruckner or Sibelius, but one needs to listen to a work several times to really "get" this composer..... (Studying history of the Soviet Union also helps here.) But aside from Rachmaninoff, maybe the greatest 20th Century composer.

I'd vote for Debussy or Stravinsky as the greatest 20th century composer, rather than Shostakovich, although I like them all.
