I'm not a musically educated listener, I just know what moves me...
And for me, the primo Mahler 2 is Solti/CSO) on Decca. It totally moves me - every time.
Listening to it (often) I totally understand Gilbert Kaplan's obsession with this symphony.
But his performance doesn't come close to Solti's (IMHO).
Follow Ups:
The very first performance of the Mahler 2 I bought (back in my LP days) was the Solti - with the LSO. (His CSO recording hadn't been made yet!)
You bought one of the most bombastic performances ever recorded. Solti was too much a musical entrepreneur to offer a spiritual performance of anything ;much less any Mahler.
The very first Mahler 2 I bought was with Abravanel on Vanguard LPs. Next stop was Solti/LSO, a big improvement and still one of my favorites/
It was a victim of my purge of my LP's around 1986 or so. ;-)
I THINK I heard the Abravanel recording when it was released on DVD-Audio in the early 2000's. I also had the Mehta/Israel PO DVD-Audio which I'm pretty sure I preferred, although I have neither the Abravanel nor the Mehta/IPO recordings these days, and I've moved on to other recordings of the work.
