but if someone posts they don't like something, I don't find it useful most of the time to add anything.
I spend a fair amount of time with the string quartets and find them very satisfying. It's not everyday music, but there is a lot of not everyday music that I listen to.
Follow Ups:
Quartets and symphonies make him more than the equal of any 20th century composer. He is a giant. The greatest symphonies since Mahler and the greatest composer of quartets since Beethoven....Yes, the violin concerto is brilliant.
Shostakovich's string quartets are great music but aren't forgetting the Bartok six string quartets. the Bartok quartets are thought to be by musicians and musicologist the only new conception of the string quartet since Beethoven. If you haven't listened to them do so!
I erred completely in that careless; The Bartok quartets especially 3 and 4 are the great masterpieces of the 20th century . Every quartet is majestic and unrivaled. I have spent more time listening to Bartok quartets with the exception of the Beethoven late quartets than any other music.
For more than sixty years beginning with Ramor quartet a Vox box I have enjoyed them and studied them. So thank you for the correction At present my favorite performances are with the Tatrai
. . . there's no such thing as bad publicity!
