Yes, even with some compression, the dynamic range of classical recordings can make them too loud on loud passages. That is one of the reasons I think remote control of volume is a must. I push up the volume on quieter passages and then lower it for the loud parts. I cannot believe how many "purists" insist on NOT having remote control. If it is implemented properly it does NOT degrade sound any more than having any kind of volume control.
Follow Ups:
Purists can be a bit pedantic at times. If they're willing to put up with trying to hear a 35db violin passage then who am I to tell them different.
Just for the record, my listening area has an ambient noise level of 32db as I'm typing this. And my neighbors are not appreciating the crescendo's.

I am not at all advocating extremely wide dynamic range. For all sorts of practical reasons compression is needed for classical symphonic music (people listening in cars, on the subway, noisy environments). Even with such restricted dynamic range, classical music is often hard to listen to without adjusting the volume level. I do that all the time with large-scale works. I do want the recording to have a decent range however, because I do listen at times in an appropriately quiet environment (using headphones) where I can enjoy a fairly wide dynamic range.
The best solution for listening in noisy environments (subways, airplanes, noisy urban parks, etc.) has to be headphones (not earbuds) with noise canceling. None of them sound as good as the **best** headphones, but you will hear all of the music, including the soft parts.
Yesterday, my Bose noise canceling headphones let me enjoy some Mozart and Prokofiev's fifth symphony while my neighbor used his loud and incredibly inefficient battery-powered leaf blower for nearly two hours on his small yard.
