That's what I thought when the first bars were played.
The whole first page (except for the last three notes) is played entirely on the violin's G-string - notice the "sul Sol sin al segno *" indication right at the beginning. I'm guessing that that's probably what you and John are hearing:
IMSLP also has a Russian edition of the score available, where the piece is entitled, "Tziganskaya Rapsodiya". ;-)
That said, it always struck me as being Over the Top.

Watching your video, it's clear why you are in demand.
That's _hard_ work you're doing, and making it seem easy. Was this a test piece, or did you have something different prepared for each performer?
. . . this teacher always seems to have two or three playing the Lalo Symphonie espagnole for instance. But MOSTLY it was a different piece for each person - most of these pieces are easier (at least for me!) than Tzigane. (And Cindy was the only one playing Tzigane.) The pieces are generally pretty standard repertoire concerto first movements, e.g., this time the works included the Bach A minor, Vivaldi A minor (Op. 3 No. 8), Mozart 3, Mozart 5, Bruch 1, Saint-Saens 3, Wieniawski 2, Komarovsky 1 (a Soviet composer whom this teacher likes), Glazunov, etc., although a few kids play Handel Sonatas, and others play "showpieces" by Sarasate and Wieniawski. (Other years, the Tchaikovsky or Sibelius Concertos will show up too.) One kid played the Brahms Concerto (first movement), but his mother was accompanying him. (I'd like another crack at that work sometime - it's been ages since I played it!)
Sometimes I get frustrated that my performances aren't better, but, as Ms. CfL reminds me, having to play all these different works on the same day is certainly going to impact how much attention you can give to each performance. And, as Stalin is said to have declared, quantity can have its own quality! That's my particular niche. ;-)

Cindy is but one of the many fine local babe violinists we have in our area! ;-)
