AndreAnalog Scott
So Part 1 is over on General Asylum (link below). I'm just covering a few odds and ends here together with a Special Announcement.
As wonderful as Scott's 2Ch system sounded, it has one potential drawback (at least for some types of listeners) - and Scott admits this himself: in order to hear this system in all its glory, you HAVE to be sitting in the "sweet spot". If you stand up out of your chair and walk a step or two away, the illusion vanishes and the sound itself becomes surprisingly dull. But if you ARE in the sweet spot, I can't imagine better sound from a 2Ch system.
One other track I was impressed by, and which I didn't mention in the other post, was the stunning 1957 Reiner/CSO performance of that fun Stalinist era piece, Kabelevsky's "Colas Breugnon" Overture - a performance which IMHO has not been equalled since (at least in my experience). This was another instance where I've had this recording for years (decades?) myself, and I count it among the best examples of the "golden age of stereo". I have the SACD which allows for 3Ch playback, and it sounds great on my system. But it's possible that it sounded even better in 2Ch on Scott's system! Once again, very impressive - as long as you stay in the sweet spot! ;-)
And now for the Special Announcement! As we were leaving for dinner, Scott asked if I noticed a stack of pink boxes in one of the rooms. "You'll never guess what's in them!", he added. I didn't have a clue, so Scott clued me in: "Each one of those boxes contains one of Yuja's skirts/dresses which she used as her famous and beloved concert attire for her appearances in solo concerts and with various orchestras." I'm sure everyone will remember what Scott was talking about!![]()

I'm sure we all know women who would absolutely LOVE to be attired in the "Yuja Look", and now it may just be possible for that special person in YOUR life to do just that! Because Scott and Yuja are devising a plan to auction off Yuja's concert attire! It could be a special birthday or Valentine's Day gift! Each outfit would come with a certificate of authenticity, signed by Yuja herself! Proceeds would be divided between various charitable organizations (which they are trying to decide on and arrange for right now!) and a fund which will go towards the payment to designers of NEW outfits for Yuja. It's a win-win!
This is for real, and it seems like a GREAT idea to me! And remember, you read about it here first!
Follow Ups:
I have the Audiophile edition.
It is, without a doubt, the biggest improvement after speakers to my system.
Scott uses Sanders 10 speakers upstairs. As for the sweet spot, these speakers have an extremely small one. With the BACCH headtracking it can be widened to several feet. But it only works for one listener.
I wonder if he has tried the BACCH with the Sound Labs?
Did you compare with and without the BACCH?
In answer to your question though, no, I never heard the upstairs system without BACCH4Mac, and Scott apparently does not have BACCH4Mac set up on his Sound Labs on the first floor.
Yeah, I am a fan and try not to miss a chance to yell about it.
Too bad he didn't turn it on and off for you. You would have been amazed at the collapse of the soundstage when turned off on those recordings.
. . . when I moved out of the sweet spot! ;-)
Probably the biggest problem with electrostatics is the vice-like sweet spot. Martin Logan curved the panel to make it slightly larger, maybe a few inches. BACCH can make it three feet or more.
When in the sweet spot of an electrostatic the slightest movement can lose the magic. The speakers still perform in the room like any other speaker but not with that magic. The BACCH widens the sweet spot for the measured listener where they don't need to worry about a vice like space.
The BACCH experience is different. You can be sitting in the sweet spot in normal stereo and enjoy the benefits of electrostatics. When you turn BACCH on the experience changes to a wider/deeper soundstage, outside the speakers. I'm guessing that's what you experienced.
My favorite is the green one:(
I'm surprised you didn't give a link to the auction site!
