The 9001 has three internal conductors, two solid silver and a stranded.
So the stranded is already available for ground, so the shield doesn't need to be connected at both ends.

But the title refers to the 9003 which I refer to, and we have been asked about.
I think at this point, rather than going for the extended length right off the bat, I'm settling on a more iterative approach. That is by opting for shorter bulk lengths of both types (9001 & 9003) and self-terminating them with some of the XLR's I have on hand.I am admittedly a bit taken by the single continuous (flat/rectangular) leads of the 9001 variety, and presently look at the 9003 as "over-engineered" for the somewhat atypical WiFi free domestic environment I have. But that's obviously just an opinion, not backed up by any real tests. The 9003 is constructed in such a way, that perhaps when extended over 20' may become a positive attribute, but could be overkill at a shorter length when balanced. Though I do admit the 9003 has smitten several of you so I am certainly not discounting that fact.
Thus...
Once my funding source resets in another day or two... I'll toss in my order for a 3m (1.5m x 2) sample of both types and warm up the soldering iron.

IMHO. They need three weeks continuous for burn in otherwise you will get days where your system will sound lifeless and just plane dull, also use good xlr connectors as they demand so. Enjoy your journey.
I know, but the OP seems more interested in the 9001 now.
