Back to basics.. were the physical interfaces thoroughly cleaned (chemically/mechanically) and sibilance still noted?

Yes, this was after all contacts had been cleaned.
So- I can only think of the following. Two or three completely independent cable makers have always said "only connect the shield at source". One went so far as saying there are teeny variances of current at each end hence only connecting one end to shield.My thought is this. Your bog standard IEC cable will usually raise your eyebrows where, for a nanosecond, you think "fuck me, the top end has really opened up" until you realise the overall presentation is mush.
If you are connecting the unshielded end to the source, surely the EMI/RFI and crap has nowhere to go to ground just like a cheap power cable. Maybe the initial top end sibilance (why does that show as a spelling error) is actually just noise that has nowhere to go?
