Much like Palustris suggests, this will become a trial and error experiment with your ears being the final arbitrator. When I finally found the "perfect" IC from turntable to SUT sonically, I also found I had to disconnect the ground cable from SUT to phono pre-amp to eliminate the hum it created. My only ground wire at this point is from my turntable to the phono pre-amp. Both the IC's in this set-up ( table to SUT and SUT to phono stage) are shielded of course. Both also have directionality arrows indicating the shield is tied at the source component end. Now maybe if I would have experimented with reversing either or both of these IC's, I could have went back to my original set-up where the SUT was grounded as well, but I chose to leave well enough alone. Everything sounds excellent and no hum is present. As always YMMV, but I've lived with this configuration for close to two years now without issue.
Follow Ups:
I can only say that in my configuration adding ground wire between not grounded sut and grounded phonostage also make sound worse and caused a hum.
I mentioned my situation hoping you'd see a parallel in your case. Regardless, even though my SUT has a captive ground wire "hinting" it should be grounded, it's better left ungrounded. This at least in my current configuration.
