The EAR (to my ear) was very rich, warm, and robust sounding but "not quite right" (a little rough and distorted) with my MC cartridges. Some folks suggested running it in MM mode with a good outboard SUT. The external Bob's Devices CineMag SUT made a big improvement to EAR SQ with MC cartridges. If you're running strictly MM it shouldn't matter.Pretty impressive PCB and nice build!
Congrats!

Is not overly rich but just fast and musical. I do use a Nice SUT with my Shelter 901 (Retipped) and it sounds very nice. I too don't not like overly rich or warm gear. I do remember the original EAR 834P I heard was kind of like that as was this Close until the upgrades and mods changed that.
This Close after the first upgrades and mods one my original clone beat out the highly praised SPL Audio Phonos. I had them side by side and the EAR was better. Now this new build is way better than that highly upgraded modded Clone I did. I did use better Wirewound resistors, no Caron Film or Carbon Comp resistors in this build. I also used Metal film in the RIAA eq circuit.
This new build of the 834P sounds really nice with all music I'm playing. No need to look any further since I'm very happy with this Phono preamp.
My 834P was nice but ultimately a little too rich for me. Sounds like your Clone tamed the overly 'ripe' sound ;-)
My favorite phono preamp before I lost interest in vinyl was the Rogue Ares II. I thought it was much better than the more pricey Aesthetix Rhea. The Rhea was extremely versatile but the Rogue sounds better. In modestly priced solid-state MM only phonos I liked the Graham Slee Era Gold V.
Looks like you're having way too much fun! Enjoy.
Abe, I'm having a blast with these clones and making them way better than they were and the best fit for my system.Last week I lost my job and now have the time to work on the projects that I had started and never was ever to finish. I have started the Chassis enclosure for this Clone build and should be totally done soon.
After this I'm onto my 2 way horn DIY build. I have pre-fitted the cabs to make all is ok, now I need to glue them together and strengthen them with the internal braces. I will add the mounting hardware and then sand the bare cabs down to prepare for veneering. Then the Final crossover build in their separate wooden enclosures.
Then I will attempt to start on my JBL 4345 clones as my final project. I have all the drivers, lenses, Labels and crossover parts. I just need to start the measuring and cutting of these cabs which will be a challenge for me. I have a buddy that has volunteered to come down from Seattle and help with the cabs. That should be it since the 2245H 18" woofers, 2123 Mid woofers, 2420 horns, and 2405's Super Tweeter have all been restored.
Then I should be done with all my projects. :)

Sorry to hear that you were laid off. Hopefully you'll get some unemployment benefits. Since you and your employers have been paying into it it's not like a handout. At least you have some free time to work on projects for a while until you start looking for a job again - if that's the plan.
Sounds like you have a decent shop for woodworking and electronics. I should setup a table for electronics but I don't have the space, tools, or skill for woodwork.
Enjoy!
