Hello all,
UPS has lost my preamp that was sent back for repair. It has only been 2 weeks since I filed a claim with UPS but i have no confidence I will get resolution soon so I am looking for a backup in the $750 - $1200 price range. Also, I would prefer a fully balanced preamp.
I am not looking for a high priced replacement as the one that UPS lost is my end of line preamp. But i am without a preamp so I am without music.
Looking for options (currently looking at the Schitt Freya plus/balanced version) and/or opinions.
Regards
Richard

If you only need one XLR input, try the Topping Pre90 for a little over $500 (also has one unbalanced RCA input). The remote control is crap due to hiding the optical receiver where it can't see the remote, but this can be mitigated by a $9 IR extender from Amazon.Sound quality is good enough to earn a class A rating from Stereophile, and it has become my main preamp.

Like you, I'm also currently using the main unit only . However, if you need more than one balanced and one unbalanced input, you can always buy the input extender for additional inputs. The complete unit with the input extender costs $848 and provides a total of four balanced inputs and two unbalanced inputs as shown in the link below:

While it is not balanced, it is cheap. Reasonable good SQ and good value. I bought mine $50. DHT.
what's wrong with the other two listed in your profile?
I was going to suggest an inexpensive passive attenuator box.
It's a matter of personal preference but I had the Schiit Freya+ and now the Schiit Kara. The all solid-state Kara is a bit more robust, full-bodied, and impactful and that reflects my personal preference. I had the Freya+ too thinking that I would get that rich glorious 6SN7 sound that I once had in my Cary SLP-05 but that wasn't to be. It was still an excellent preamp but I sold it and went with the Kara.Schiit now makes the Freya+ F and Kara F. I believe these are the same preamps as the previous gen but with the option to add something they're calling Forkbeard that is used with a phone App to monitor and control the preamp - and other Forkbeard enabled Schiit.
I'm sure there are better preamps out there compared to the Freya+ or Kara but these might surprise you! I think they're better than just stop-gap.

Topping's are balanced and within your budget.
I love my Topping Pre90. I guess it's not for everyone, but it works outstandingly in my system. It's fully balanced and it has a relay operated volume control with a range from -99-dB to +16-dB in 0.5-dB steps. It sounds better to me than my Pass Labs X1, and the reason I bought the thing is because of Kal Rubinson's review in Stereophile . It comes in either a black or silver finish.
Some people have problems with the remote control, but so far mine works just fine. Other people have concerns about the input impedance of the balanced inputs at 2k-ohms. The input impedance of the unbalanced inputs is a more reasonable 10k-ohms. Again, it works superbly in my system with a balanced source connected, and I plan to keep it as my main preamp for the rest of my life.
To each his own!
I liked my Freya+,but moved onto Audio Note.Had mine with Brimar 6sn7/Lisst in output.
With todays' market, patience might be your best option.
I ,no longer look forward to selling anything during these current conditions.
