Van Alstein says they can easily....The power wattage at 350 at 4 Ohms makes me question it. The total cost for both would be $3400....The other liability is he is in his 80's His products were innovative in their day.
Thanks
Follow Ups:
I have that exact combination, and the answer is "Yes," and they sound excellent together.
I usually play at around 85db, and that is not a problem. However, the amps do get hot when played at high volume level.
I also have the Odyssey Extreme Mono. They are 20 years old. I wanted to replace the caps, but didn't want to incur the round trip shipping cost and deal with the weight of the Odyssey amps. So I purchased the much lighter weight DVA M255 to take the place of the Odyssey amps.
I enjoy both the AVA amps and the Odyssey amps.
Thank you! That is great news. I have an additional question(in bad taste) Frank is in his upper 80's...I do not know what plans he had for his products in the future....His design for this amp is very simple and thoughtful but in the event that.......
How would the unit be repaired?
Sorry for the bothersome thought...Again thanks for your response... As I mentioned I my self can no longer deal with a pair of 120lb amps as I am moving.
It seems that Frank has a group of engineers working for him who are responsible for many of the recent and future products.
I suggest you go on the "audio circle" website. When you click on the word "circles," a list of sub-headings will appear. Near the top is the "Audio by Van Alstine" site. You will find a lot of information there.
For example, here is a message from Van Alstine himself posted on 9/10/2024:
"As I celebrate my 86th birthday, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I have had. It is with a mix of gratitude and excitement that I announce that it is time to pass the remote.
After over 60 years of running Audio by Van Alstine, I have decided it's time to hand over the business' day-to-day operations to Mary Staples and the team. I certainly don't take this decision lightly, but there's little question in my mind that the time is right for this change.
Mary has been with me for many years, and over time she has become my trusted second-in-command. Her product and industry insights are now an integral part of AVA as is her passion for audio. I also know Mary is fully committed to the values that have allowed Audio by Van Alstine to remain in business all this time -- in a very difficult industry. I have absolute confidence she will care for the business as I have. There simply isn't anyone else I'd rather have taking the helm at AVA. Please join me in congratulating Mary in her new role.
Regarding product development, our engineering staff has been doing incredible and innovative work over the last few years. I'm immensely proud of their original thinking and what they have accomplished in our recent range of products. I have no doubt that their track record of excellence will continue into all future AVA endeavors.
I'm incredibly excited about the future of Audio by Van Alstine. There are some wonderful new products in the pipeline, and I'm sure it will surprise no one that these will continue AVA's commitment to making class-defining audio products at affordable prices. I'm eagerly looking forward to watching these make people happy in the same way we have been for decades.
While my role change means I won't be managing things on a day-to-day basis, I do plan to oversee the business as a whole for as long as I'm able. So, this isn't good-bye. It just means I finally get some time to relax and enjoy the music.
Frank"

Ha! Wild! One of us or both of us is half psychic and logical.Amazing.
Thanks ;makes the choice easy or at least as sensible gamble.
Best,
Utley
If the circuit used some "hard to source" parts it may be a problem to fix. But as long as circuit diagrams for the amp are available and access to a decent tech they should be repairable long after the Frank or the company is gone.
I had some vintage Classe gear that was checked out for me by a local tech. He advised that some of the parts were no longer available locally and that I might have to ship it back to Canada for repair. Shortly after I sold the units and bought something more recent (I would have kept the Classe if I knew it could be fixed locally).
Thanks Dusty:
It would be a no brainier except for FV's age...Still might do it. There are virtually no stereo repair shops in NYC and but hi-end two retail stores in ManH. Hard to imagine.
Stratos Mono Extreme:
improvements over mono model:
$3,400 USD (pair)
1 x 200+ Watts RMS @ 8 Ohms (each)
High Class A /AB
Additional 60,000µF memory bank for 180,000µF total (each)
> 120 amps current delivery
Additional 400 VA Plitron transformer for 800VA total (each)
Power consumption when idle ±35Watts
> 66 lbs / 30 kg weight

Thank you again! They have an excellent reputation but completely forgot about them Thanks again!
A doubling (or halving) of power is a 3dB difference.
Decibels (dB) = 10 log(P2/P1)
800/350 = 2.2857
log of 2.2857 = 0.359
10 x 0.359 = 3.59dB
The difference between 800-Watts and 350-Watts is 3.6 dB

Yeah, not much difference.
This Absolute Sound Article says 300 Watts at 4 ohms.I use a Cary CAD 200 (200/350 WPC 8/4 Ohms) on my LRS with excellent results.
The VA amp certainly has enough power.

Thank you;
Obviously they won't do .
Huh
"The VA amp certainly has enough power."

Thank you! Ut
It's a 4 ohm load that is primarily resistive in nature.
350 watts should get you over 100 db on peaks. How loud do you listen?
Thanks Dusty:
I play a lot of organ music---right now I have powerful amps but they weigh 110 lbs each: with 800 watts at 4 ohms at substantial levels . I am planning on an apt. move...
I play a lot of organ music...
Which subs?
Did hear your 745 Ultimate Sound labs. Easily the best speakers I have ever heard....Those are the ones I could never keep in a NYC apt.
thank you very much. :)
Recently, Sound Lab has been courting foreign markets with smaller models. Not only does the model name imply height and radiation angle, it now counts horizontal cells. Mine would be called a U7-7C. Three and five cell wide panels are now available.
Click here for a configurator. Scroll down a bit for link.
Thanks for responding...Using two SBS's 1000 previous incarnations. Have tuned for very low volume---I am in an apt--Have them on wooden portion of the floor...
Nothing in the world like your Stats....but too dangerous to own in a NYC apt that is 60 years old plumbing.
I use a pair of Eosone powered subs to supplement Acoustat 1+1s in the HT. Placed at room diagonals.
300 watts/channel works fine for Bach. :)
Maybe try playing some organ samples and measure the SPL you would find satisfying and see how loud it is. Armed with that you could figure out how much you need. The difference between 300 (or 350) watts and 800 is about 4 to 5 db volume difference on peaks. And that is assuming that the 1.7's don't compress the peaks (they do, they're not a linear speaker).
Apartment huh? Maybe headphones instead.
Short answer: yes, easily. I would be concerned about Frank's age, however.
