Speaking as the owner of this table... I can say I'm fully prejudiced in favor of it! Seriously, though, it sounds *amazing*. It's superior in every way to my prior plinth - no slouch - which was 24" wide and had the 12" arm directly mounted on the plinth.I suspect tubes's posts are right on the money. Those guys at LignoLab / Auditorium 23 are all about combining different materials - that armboard is a hunk of solid cast copper, the plinth itself is all different woods connected in various ways inside - and testing by listening to find the best resonance control. The armboard is not an afterthought - the plinth was designed with 12" arms in mind.
