Goldring states the stock cartridge should have a VTA of 24% @ 1.7 grams nominal VTF. Either there is too much tracking force or the suspension of the cartridge is collapsing. There should be more room than .5 mm as you said. As others have said the Goldring 1000 series cartridges are low riders, but I don't think yours should be riding as low as you state.
