I keep my 'table covered with a lightweight silk scarf, which does a decent job of holding the dust at bay. I've been using it for years with no mishaps or close calls, but you obviously need to be careful around the stylus.
For cleaning, I use a surprisingly powerful "Hurricane" air blower (available at camera stores and eBay), a micro-fiber cloth, and some folded lint-free tissues and Q-tips for hard to reach places. I also use another clean, damp (with R.O. water) micro-fiber cloth to thoroughly clean the platter's surface every few months.
I give the platter a good blasting with the air blower before each spinning session too, and it also comes in handy for blasting away any stubborn dust particles on LPs that a carbon fiber brush can't dislodge (after using a Zerostat).
