The most important surface to keep free of dust is the platter. I always have the platter covered by a throw-away record designated specifically for that use (a picture disc of the old tv animal character, album titled: "Benji's in Love."). Even so, I use a "microfibre" dust cloth once in a while that does a terrific job of removing dust. I have a vacuum platter, so keeping the platter clean is a very high priority.The other surfaces I clean using eye glass lens cleaner and cleaning paper. This prevents scratching of the acrylic surface of my table (Basis Debut).
I have a dust cover, but I don't use it. It is too much trouble to lift and replace, and I am sure that one day I will accidently jar the tonearm if I were to regularly use the cover.
