As a contol, one could try a spotmat. foregoing the acrylic platter marriage.I like many of the suggestions already offered. Static discharge through a cart is no joke. In fact it is a crying matter [lost an Ort MC30 that way (one channel)].
If it happens to you, you never do it again. I always 'discharge' before handling tonearm.
