I have the arm of my JMW9 grounded as you describe, but it does not get rid of the static buildup he is describing. It builds up on the record as it is playing. I think that when the record is picked up from the platter, by the user, the record discharges to you (the ground) causing a discharge that is picked up by the cartridge.
