I find I prefer to set up my own. Whatever software you choose, make sure it will export the data in some common format, so you have the ability to move on to other databases and systems later. You never want to have to type it all in again. One such format that is about the most commmonly seen and used by various programs, is the common old 'comma separated value' or csv format. Just about anything will read this in.For the record (no pun intended) I use a PDA based program in my Palm Tx, because it most convenient to be able to use the database from wherever I happen to be. The program is called 'Smartlist to go'. It exchanges data with Microsoft Access on my PC, and from there I can export to csv, and generally guarantee I have access to my data in other programs.
You could even use a spreadsheet, but generally a true database will have better and faster, and more flexible, sorting and reporting abilities.
