There is a big difference in cd play back depending on the player. I did a quick search of the CD80 and found many discussions of how to improve its sound with modifications. So there's hope if you invest some money. But there were several comments on its less than stellar performance without them. Not to belittle the player, most things have their place, but it seems like a poor investment to put money into a player that wasn't great to begin with.A couple things you could consider, OG; another cd player or a tubed buffer. Oh, and then there's the option to sell the CD80 and not listen to cds at all.
If you can find a Musical Fidelity X-10v3 tubed buffer (not the earlier versions) for around $200 or less you might give it a try. It did wonders for my 19 year old JVC cd player. (Another less than stellar player.) Tamed the harshness and created a more balanced output top to bottom. I started to sit and listen to cds again.
The other option is to get another cd player. Shop around. Listen to a few if you can. There are some very good players out there as others have mentioned. I bit the bullet and spent WAY more than I'd planned on a new cd player this year. But I have to say I'm really enjoying my cd collection now. In comparison, I spent less money on my cd player than I have on my analog set up (turntable, cartridge, phono preamp) so it's a matter of perspective.
Anyway, there's hope for those redbook cds you have.
Tom
