I've found, with the better sonics, that I rather like Kempff, I even sense drive and passion (system *must* do justice to the left hand) that is somewhat vieled by a seemingly overt "classical" approach ... I'd allow that he plays Beethoven as though it were Bach but I don't see that as particularly bad given I don't (allways) require the romantic approach.Of course there's plenty of other excellent interpretations, we're talking the Beethoven sonatas after all! To mention just one favorite I don't think I'll ever encounter a better No. 32 (op. 111) than Friedrich Gulda's (Philips Digital Classics 412 114-1 (lp)).
Mind you given Gulda's excessive romanticism, that mostly found expression in the appreciation of himself, the work ended up teamed with one of his own "late" compositions on the opposite side ... I could have lived with another late Beethoven sonata myself but I suppose you can't have it all! :)
