I would point out that the original design objective of the ball and flat design is to minimize the contact point , and the resultant friction which creates noise , as much as possible.
I guess what is heard would depend on the sensitivity of the system , or more logically the subjectivity of one's hearing process, what it is used to reporting about the sound heard, good or bad.
I have read of some people simply turning the ball to create a new contact point, ,but I suppose a flat worn beyond use would have to be replaced. Sapphire flats, flat to one wave length of light are available pretty cheaply from scientific optical suppliers. installing one is beyond any advice I can offer.
I once again struggle to resist bragging about the oil pumping main platter bearing in the Michell gyro . which is also available as a part., if one is looking for long term sustainability.
