Yes, skipping. If it's happening on new records, it might be due to bad tonearm bearings. A stylus that's broken or worn so badly it can't hold its place in the grooves will usually just skate across the surface rather than skipping. One way to test the bearings - turn off anti-skate and adjust the counterweight so the stylus floats above the mat. Then blow gently on the headshell from the side to confirm that it moves easily right-to-left without getting stuck.
