Al Sekela guided me through these and other transformer based AC filtering tweaks. He gave me an explanation that seemed to favor EI cores vs. torroid. Best I can paraphrase is that toroids may be too efficient at passing stuff through, while EIs have a greater filtering effect (paradoxically because they are not as efficient) somehow. Ask Al.Meantime, I use EIs in 2 filtering devices: a Jon Risch Iso Tranny for my digitals, and a transformer based parallel filter elsewhere.
Al has been guiding me through the use of BOTH chokes and transformers, as well as R-C filtering since this stuff was first posted on this board. Look up his previous posts and drop him a line for a good explanation. He's doing more choke experimentation right now.
