It's a 4-ton unit that thad the highest SEER rating I could find--16--when I had it installed 15 years ago. Its airhandler (filter, fan, and evap. coil) has a 11-speed fan, varying from c. 900CFM to 2200 (IIRC). The company that installed it did a poor job of making it quiet, and I've been working with 2 other companies ever since to improve airflow and reduce noise. For a while I ran the fan speed on 1 (heat), 2 (low cool), and 3 (high cool). Right now they're on 1, 3, and 5, but soon they'll be on 1, 3, and 4.
This spring I had done what may be the last ducting project. There are now 3 grilles feeding low-velocity, LOW-NOISE, cool air; the original single grill, lower-center, is blocked. Most people who visit are amazed that the room is so cool, well-ventilated, and QUIET.
Paul, continue investigating reducing your fan/air noise; it'll be worth it. Maybe you can find a half-speed motor to replace the one that's there, but maybe the person who commented on the variable-speed motors in another model has the better idea.
