One key thing to consider is ....

...how much support is available as you do the build and the clarity of the manual.

I had never used a soldering iron until I decided to build my first Bottlehead ForePlay. I got the iron, some solder and some misc parts to develop basic soldering skills and I suppose I had 1/2 hr or so of practice time before I dove into the kit. It was fairly easy for me to build, turned out great and exceeded my every expectation with the sonics but there were several times I had to go to the Bottlehead forum and ask 'what about .....?' when I wasn't quite sure about something. I built a FP for a friend and have done some other Bottlehead projects but I still would not be in a position to dive into one of the other kits that is basically a complex schematic and some parts (I'm not familar with the Yamamoto kit). Perhaps Yamamoto has similar builder support, in some form. Bottlehead's was great for me.

My experience with several kits is that with good instructions and support the build is fairly straight-forward; it's when you run into a problem that it can get a bit dicey and frustrating, especially for a beginner (like me).
