Hold up the ERS to a strong light: you will see a mish mash of cut fibers running randomly throughout the paper. This is supposedly nickel plated carbon fibers acting as an antenna for RF frequencies. The random lengths pick up different frequencies and determine at what frequency range the ERS will work best at.If you look edgewise at the ERS you'll see a black line running down the middle. If you separate the outer layers, you'll find a fine mesh layer of carbon fiber acting as a ground plane for the CF shards.
The effect of ERS will vary with different digital/video machines. Some machines, like the latest Regas, actually use analog/digital filters to roll off the upper RF frequencies. For these machines use of ERS is too much of a good thing.
I've worried about the CF mesh building up a charge. You can easily ground the ERS by simply threading a length of bare copper wire through the cloth and grounding it. This may be responsible for the change in sound over time as there is a possibility of a static charge building up. I use to make sure a cover crew penetrated a section of the ERS paper in order to provide a ground point.
I also place small pieces of ERS directly on various chips in the unit using double stick tape. The chips and the laser mechanism generate a lot of the RF. Simply lining the cabinet picks up the emitted RFI, but the true sources are still emitting RF which can be absorbed by other components on the PCB and the analog stage.
A simple wrap around the IC ends is beneficial in my experience. people have bandied around the idea of contact rectification, and a possible diode effect of the mechanical contacts. A simple wrap seems to eliminate the effects emanating .
AS usual YMMV.
