If they are a TO-220 style then I think I can answer. They don't need to be mounted but there is provision to attach them to a heatsink. I use the slip on style heatsinks. The legs can be bent and soldered into the board. I use a clip on heatsink to help dissipate the heat to the body of the diode when soldering. Diodes are directional devices and you must orient them correctly. Most multimeter's have provision to check diodes.
