I live in S.E. Az. and everybody's Svc. Panel is on the OUTSIDE of the house. This is because the fire code requires that there be a master shut off on the outside of the house so the firemen can shut off the electricity in the house before they begin spraying water in all directions. However, the %@$#*& builders, who will slit their childrens' throats if it would save thrm $5 so they put the entire svc. panel on an outside wall of the house rather than inside, with a master breaker OUTSIDE. I can't wait until a breaker trips during a raging thunderstorm. The major point being that when adding wiring & circuits you may also run amiss of building codes in addition to wiring codes. For instance, in Az. you may not drill a hole or holes thru a ceiling joist. I asked if it were permissable to notch the bottom of a couple to allow crossing to another bay. That stumped him. After having a new garage built I ran a 20A circuit with 3 outlets at the back of my workbench and one on each sidewall. The electrical inspector refused to approve the wiring. "Why ?!" I asked. He informed me that all electrical outlets in a garage must either be 8 ft. or more above the floor (?!) or be GFI outlets so that if some fool decides to wash his car in the garage he can't electrocute himself in the process. Pity, he would probably have won a Darwin Award.
