No problem, Dave, I realize that my previous post was provocative. I started from a system that lacked somehow middle-bass extension (the rest was OK) and this was due to excessive damping. I recovered part of the information because I removed damping and I wanted that coloration on middle-bass because Zingalis are too bright with classical music. I also explored other paths (cable, power, etc) but this tweak was the most successful ones (along with treatment of my listening room).IMHO the dogma of perfect reproduction in hiend/hifi systems is difficult to obtain in many cases:
- Budget limitations are against since we cannot spend all of our money (I personally prefer to spend it into CDs and live music). Even in recording studios there are different ways to place panels for absortion/diffusion for listening (e.g. see the post http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/tweaks/messages/138086.html), and they do not have our budget limitations.
- Psycho-acustical limitations are also against. If we sit down in different places in a church during a performance, we have different listening images. What we have on records is the image chosen by the sound engineer that manipulates it anyway. So what's real fidelity? I prefer more black-haired women and maybe you prefer blondes, both we are right. Music is simply fun for someone, or noiseless reproduction for others. They are both right in my view as long as one enjoys music.
Cheers
Roberto
