Steve, I'd say the original poster answered his own question. The solution for the infamous CD-3400 problem was using an external PS; that is what anyone, incl. myself, who had the CD-3400 was forced to do to resolve the issue. Using a battery did not correct the (polarity) problem, as I recall.What exactly is the "polarity problem" given that the device will be powered by the same polarity whether using batteries or an external supply? It's not like if you reverse the polarity of the power supply the circuit works as it did before but with an opposite polarity. It simply won't work at all.
