I mean less than 1cm? Also, have the area drawn by the cap, the IC and the leads the smallest possible; The best place for the 0.1uF cap is under the package.
How did you layout those components?Also, which kind of 0.1uF cap are you using for HF decoupling?
I ask you those questions because you should not hear sounding differences Since you do, I suspect (1) some induction along a too wide area, and/or (2)an oscillation on the power rail due to the power wire inductance making a ringing tank with the decoupling caps., or (3) something else to debusk.
