Just kidding....in all seriousness though, the cardas setup for speakers is one of the biggest bang for the buck tweaks there is (free, just your time and labor). I use it for my Magnepans. Just being off a small amount makes a big difference, but you're talking more than a foot. 2 recommendations:
Pull the speakers out where the Cardas measurements dictate, and let your wife listen to her favorite recording. Maybe when she hears the difference she'll be more willing to let you keep the room setup that way. Other recommendation: I don't know how heavy the speakers are, or if they will scratch your floors, but you could always mark the floor with something like scotch tape that the wife can't see, and move the speakers further into the room during your listening sessions, then move them back when finished.
Option 3...every week, move them outwards an inch. It will be so gradual she won't notice :-)
