Real NOS are often stronger than new manufacture tubes, tubes don't diminish sitting on a shelf. There are a lot of flavors of 5U4 as well as manufacturers. Each of the following tube designations represent slightly different construction and performance: 5U4, 5U4-G, 5U4-GA, 5U4-GB, 5U4-GT, 5U4-WG, 5AS4.Can't go wrong with a 1950's RCA 5U4GB. You want more of an audible difference plug in a couple of (Real, English) Mullard 5AR4s.
