+1 on the gold pin JJ E88 tubes! I just replaced the stock tubes in my Freya N—no name Russian 6NP1s—with them and the difference is startling. I realize that is not the toughest comparison, and other tubes, including the regular JJ offering, would also be better than the Schiity ones the preamp came with, but I am well pleased. I look forward to them getting even better over the coming weeks.
And I'm not surprised. I've used JJ EL84s in my amplifiers for 20 years and always liked them, ditto their 12AX7 and 12AU7 in those applications. Speaking as a guy who remembers paying $10 or so for Amperex, Telefunken, Mullard et al back in the golden age, l'm now a JJ fanboy. Also note that Mike Sanders of Quicksilver fame finds their current preamp tubes better than NOS.
