Bob, hi. Check out tubes4hifi's VTA stereo 70 board. This is a great sounding board. You'll like the price. Also, there is so much room in the Stereo 70 chassis you'll be able to redo power supply without a lot of grief. Mikey Samra has recently tweaked up the VTA board using a powerful simulator. With the VTA board there are many more tube choices that don't include a triode/pentode (7199) compromise. You can even get the basic board and stuff it yourself with premium parts of your own choosing. I think you could update the 70 in many ways without burning through your projected 1k$ budget and have a more enjoyable time doing it. Have fun.
