Most likely the tetrode mode is actually ultra-linear. Not too many amps actually run the screens from a fix voltage source. The VTL and Manley amps David designed are all ultra-linear and/or triode connected. Luke might have departed from David's designs by now, but I don't know.It is true that the EL34 is a pentode, but most amp designs simply connect the screen to the cathode, effectively yielding a four element tube that behaves somewhat like a tetrode.
