Many thanks guys! The answers and suggestions have been helpful.No, I don't think I will reconfigure the amps to run on power tubes other than the 8417. As some people have pointed out here, the 8417 has a sonic signature not found on the KT88 or 6550. Besides, KT88's don't sell for chump change either, so you might as well use the money to acquire used or NOS 8417's, and a good multi-tester/ammeter.
I just acquired a Jadis DPL 2 preamp to partner the Quicksilver GE 8417 mono amps, and the results are super, at this price point, that is.
