Usually a tube amp will consume at least twice their rated output power, i.e. if the amp is rated for 50W output it will draw at least 100W (or VA) form the ac line. But those figures are at full rated power. If you have efficient speakers and listen at moderate levels you probably are drawing 15 -20 watts (VA) Very loud levels could be achieved without burning out the stepdown transformer.The big problem with GE 8417 was that of excessive reverse grid current which cancelled the negative bias voltage increasing the current through the tubes. Mike did a good job of testing the GE 8417s for excessive reverse grid current but as the tube ages the problem can get worse and eventually blow out fuses. If I were you I would convert the amps to EL34s or JJ KT77s (which BTW, are my current favorite tubes) Triode Electronics has instructions on how to modify QS 8417 to use EL34s or QS will modify them for you at a reasonable cost.
