I remember them well. Around NYC they were mostly in drug stores and the tube inventory was in the cabinet below the tester. I was into audio at the time and most of what they had were TV and radio tubes. There were very few audio tubes and you could forget about a matched pair or two of just about anything for that matter. There were however some tube stores (yes I said tube stores, you know like record stores) with as much as 80% off list price and they did carry audio tubes.
