Anyone else remember going into drug stores and hardware stores as a kid and seeing those 'tube centers' with ...

... a tube tester and racks or cabinets full of various tubes? People would bring in tubes from radios (and I suppose Sherwoods and Mac's and Fishers and Scotts, etc), test them in the tester, and purchase whatever tube they needed for a couple of dollars.

I was pretty young but I used to look at the discarded tubes in the bin next to the tester and take one occasionally. I'd play with the tester settings sometimes but I was a bit hesitant because it seemed like there might be potential for electrocution.

A friend of mine who worked at a hardware store watched at the store liquidation auction in the mid-70's as the tester, racks of new tubes and the boxes of spares all went for $10. Unfortunately, that was well *before* he got big time into tube gear ; )

I remember a lot of those DIY tube centers were RCA. Fun times!
