Of course what you say was very common. But I was thinking that when "Bud" the repairman lugged his tube caddy to your house to fix something; the most common thing that would happen is that he would substitute new tubes for old until he found the problem. If he pulled a tube from your set and replaced it with a brand new one, and that wasn't the problem, would he leave his new tube in and keep your good one? Probably not, he would take his and put yours back and keep going until he found the problem. Meanwhile, his "new" tube keeps getting less new the more he does this. I am by no means a tube expert but I have read that many of the old-timers say that tube testers are good, but the real test is "in circuit". So I think that many of them repaired by substitution rather than by testing. Perhaps I am wrong...--Matt
