Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

TYVM everyone for your calming advice. I decided to test those tubes in group 3 again.

This time I rotated them thru Vs 2 and 1 of my ASL 1006/845s without banging on them. I installed the Herbies dampers and first, listened with my ear in the cone for weird noises. Then I subjected the amp to some noise. I connected my noise generator to the Outlaw amp, set it for broadband pinknoise, connected a little BIC speaker I have, parked the speaker immediately next to the amp, and set the level to deliver 95dBA at the V1 tube. Here's a pic.

I discovered that the vast majority of the group-3 tubes transmitted virtually no noise into the signal. I discovered 2 with newly bad heaters and tossed them, and ended up with 8 rejects--2 roundplates and 6 KRs. These were so microfonic, they 'rang' into the signal when I brushed the top grille. If someone wants to make me an offer on them, e-mail me at jeffreybehr(at)cox(dot)net.

Meanwhile, thx to your good advices and more work testing, I'm back to more tubes than I can use in my lifetime. TYVM.
