That's something I've been curious about for quite a while. I couldn't find info on the web comparing the two. For hobbyist efforts, I think gas tubes are a reasonable choice. For production equipment, I don't like the idea of designing equipment that uses out-of-production components.What do you think of the idea of using an arbitrary voltage reference (say, a 6.2 v zener) and active circuitry to achieve whatever voltage you need? Clearly, if you're regulating say, 250V from a 6.2 V source, you are multiplying the noise by a factor of 250/6.2 also, plus the noise and error from the pass circuit, so the question is whether it would be lower noise to use a couple of gas tubes in series or a "multiplied" low-noise zener.
