In my usage the KT88 seems to have an upper bass emphasis and can also sound a bit uneven thru the upper mids and highs. This give the impression of a fuller warmer experience with some high end sparkle. However, the 6550 is a much smoother and linear tube overall and without the upper bass emphasis you get a better deep bass response. Some feel the highs are slightly soft - if they are I like it. They seem natural to me. But I have one amp that LOVES KT88's so it is really amp as well as user dependent.
