Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |
|
Hi all. I have a Musical Fidelity X-Can V3 headphone amplifier which I used with my Sennheiser HD-650s. In stock form it is very good (uses JAN 6922's I believe), but I have heard that tube-rolling can have a profound (positive) influence. What I would be looking for is something detailed, crisp, dynamic, and with life. Definitely NOT something warm or dark or rolled off.I have researched the topic and have found numerous (often conflicting) suggestions. Two things to bear in mind is that 1) I want to see if I can make do with what is locally available before looking into importing here to South Africa; and 2) I do not want to go overboard and look into NOS tubes at $50+ each etc.
I can get the following locally:
- Sovtek 6922
- Ei 6DJ8EG (worried about QC/reliability though)
- 6922EH (I believe Sovtek-made, Electro Harmonix labeled)
- Svetlana 6N1P (cheapest - about 30% less then tubes above)
- Mullard, Philips ECC88 (most expensive - about 50% more than others)Any suggestions/advice? Which of the above would be good to go for?
Cheers,
X
