Thats the thing..You have new componets today such as stealth and hex fred diodes and better coupling caps like pios and teflons and black gate or polypro type filter caps and of course good mils or riken resistors and when you upgrade a vintage piece,it becomes very quiet if done right and maintains accuracy and the romantic texture tubes are famous for.Im so disappointed in my sp6 becuase frankly a good solid state pre sounds just as good as that and in some cases it excels so I figure if your going with new production tube gear find the stuff thats pure tube or almost pure tube.I think thats why ARC and CJ are making a lot of SS gear now and using there tube gear for reference and showing people how close in sound it is.Thats only because of the fact that CJ and ARC load their gear with SS regulaton and that isnt good in the end.You might as well just get a SS peice if your going to do that.
Tone controls dont bother me because at 12 oclock they are out of the circuit and the reality is the manufacturers did away with them mostly for cost savings.Mac still uses them and yes the mc275 is a killer amp and upgrades they are a sonic marvel as are my mc60s.That would be a good choice for your vandys to.
