Hi Jim. I just returned from a 30 mile trip to test the tube set. They test perfect, and the gentleman that tested them for me had a similar experience with a few quads of the SED 6550's as well. VERY hot..just as you suggested. He gave me values for both resisters in the bias circuit and the DC balance pot that will tame them, but now, none of the other tube sets I have will come up past.22 volts! It leads me to wonder what good these tubes are? I intend to replace all the original resister values, and just use a colder set of tubes.
I'm sorry to hear that Ned is gone from Triode, unless it was a beneficial move for him. He always gave solid advice, and seemed like a genuinely good guy. I already placed my order, so I hope they still provide good service at Triode. Interestingly, this set of SED 6550's is the first 'new' set of tubes that I have NOT bought from Ned. I sure wish the vender would have clued me in on the bias issue. They were not terribly expensive, but I hate to waste even $1.
I've recieved about ten e-mails since I posted this topic regarding issues with the 'hot' batch of 6550's, so I guess I am not alone. It was really bugging me. Thanks Jim!
