Okay, I waited 24 hours to see what else happened, but I want to set the record straight on something here.IMHO, the amp on eBay has NONE of my kits installed. How do I know?
1. The power supply doubler caps are 1000 uf - I never have supplied 1000 uf caps as a kit part.
2. There are no surge limiters in place, which means there will be very large inrush currents.
3. I do not use identical brand decoupling caps (the two black JJ caps at the left end of the power supply).
4. Having a second decoupling cap (the smaller cap accompanying the larger JJ) is part of my Level II kit. My Level II kit also includes changes to the OPT grounding scheme not visible here, as well as the previously mentioned inrush limiting circuit.
5. The film/foil bypass caps I supply as part of Level II are not present. There are other differences too. So I am sure this is not a power supply kit(s) purchased from me.
What about the coupling caps? Could that be a kit of mine?
I believe it is not. First off, the yellow caps mounted on the terminal boards are not in the location I recommend, and since one in each channel is connected to terminal #15, they must be the .22 uf caps. It appears they are Auricaps, but I can't be sure from the photo.
I have never supplied .22 uf caps with a yellow wrapper, so I am sure the coupling caps were not a kit of mine.
So how about the small value caps (my 2-S kit)?
Well, the coloring of the .001 caps connected from #24 to # 41 (you can see one of these caps just above the orange-orange-orange-silver striped resistor on the left hand terminal board) does not match any cap I've supplied for that position. As well, the bodies of the .039 uf caps connected from the 16 ohm terminal to the ground terminal are too small to be the cap I supply in the kit (I supply a larger rated cap because these caps can take a real pounding, I've seen them literally smoke!).
So I am confident the amp was not made with the 2-S kit from me.
The resistor kit? Well, there is no evidence of any resistors being changed other than the cathode and screen resistors, so the resistors aren't my kit.
In light of all that, how could the eBay seller say "-Uses Jim Mcshane Parts and Kits." It clearly does not, so the question is why would the eBay seller say such a thing?
For the record I don't know the eBay seller at all I don't believe.
Or "--Rebuilt to Higher Standard Than Jim Mcshane Specs." I can tell you that is absolutely untrue, although this IS an opinion so everyone is entitled to their own and as an opinion they are valid. But where would the eBay seller have gotten that idea?
Here's my beef - if you work on Citation gear either for yourself or for resale that's fine. If you want to purchase my kits/parts and use them in the rebuilding process that's fine, and I really appreciate the support - the funds generated get used to produce things like repro knobs and bottom plates, etc. But I draw the line at saying you use/used my kits if you didn't - and that's apparently what happened here.
Now anybody can look at my site, check the parts list, and assemble the parts to make their own "kits". I've always been open and willing to share what the kit contents were, and I want to continue to be that way. So if you want to get your own parts and say the work was "inspired by Jim McShane's kits" or "very similar to Jim's McShane's kits" or "identical to that overpriced buffoon Jim McShane's kits" or "way better than those Jim McShane kits" then go for it!
But please do not say they are my kits unless you use kits purchased from me and you use them as intended. I think that's inappropriate to use my name that way.
One last thing - the eBay seller also said "-The Amp on Jim Mcshane's Home Page Is Also Rebuilt By Kim Cotterman."
I've removed that picture. Yes, I am saddened by the whole thing. Kim, if the seller did that all on his own I apologize to you.
'Nuff said!
