My tube rolling experiments suggest the Premier 12s' sonics are a product of the synergy between 6550 brand and the smaller tubes. Changing the 6CG7 and 5751 had more impact than a swap between the Svet 6550C and GE 6550A. With the latter there are definitely differences - just a bit more subtle. What I used in my Premier 12s:
GE 6550A
Sylvania 6CG7 1958
RCA black plate 5751 2 micaThe Sylvania yields excellent top-end extension and detail which seems to work well with the nice mid-range of the GE. The 6FQ7/6CG7 RCA clear-tops are also quite nice, though lacking the final airy extension of the Sylvanias. Either is easily better than the stock GE (or National) from CJ - to my ears the Sylvania really makes the difference. An early 60s RCA or GE 5751 double or triple-mica black plate also adds considerable improvement over stock.
Wrt power tubes, the 12s were voiced originally with the GEs. I think it is a matter of personal preference - I found the Svets a wee bit mechanical in the 12s. Just the opposite in the Premier 140 where I preferred the Svet 6550C over the GE.
Cheers,
Tim
